18th January 2009 by Babies No Comments

Cradle cap is a kind of dermatitis or skin disease. It affects the scalp of the infant. Yellow colored oily patches grow in the scalp of the infants. It is seborrheic dermatitis. This disease is very common to new born babies of two weeks to six months of age. Generally the cradle cap disease is not at all painful or not even has any serious effect on the baby. It can be cured even without the help of the doctor. This kind of a disease can be got rid of by using good baby shampoos. The baby’s scalp can be washed regularly with a mild shampoo. After washing and drying the scalp properly, the loose scales can be removed using the finger tips. No scale should be forced removed as the infant as a soft scalp and any kind of forcible scratching may cause infection. If on shampooing only, the scales do not go, then before application of shampoo olive oil or any good quality baby oil can be used for soaking the scalp. If the scaling becomes very severe and if it spreads to the face or to the diaper area, or if the scales become red in color, then the doctor should be consulted. The doctor may prescribe some particular ointment or shampoo for use which will cure the scaling. Once it is cured the mother should take care of keeping the baby’s scalp clean and should shampoo  as it mostly occurs due to accumulation of dirt, it may also occur from marital hormones.
