Fever is the most common of all diseases occurring in irrespective of age, gender, etc. People become worried if their little one shows signs of high body temperature. In most of the cases fever it is not a disease rather it is a manifestation of some other disease. On a little rise in temperature we tend to treat that with medicines to bring the body temperature down to the normal, but this is not always the right thing to do. Before the invention of antibiotics, various kinds of fever used to take lives of people. Antibiotics have been able to cure many such dreaded diseases that caused high fever. Generally most of the virus and bacteria grow in the normal body temperature, thus the body’s internal system raises the temperature to kill those elements or try to create an unfriendly environment for their growth. Fever also activates the body to create white blood cells, antibodies and other infection fighting agents. Thus fever is a kind of defense mechanism of the body. A child of age within six months should be shown to a doctor in case of having a fever. A patient of fever accompanied with stiff neck, stomach pain etc should be immediately taken to the doctor. Very high temperature alone should also be consulted with doctor. A high fever for a prolonged time period may cause damage to the brain. Febrile seizures can also occur due to high fever. A child might turn blue or stiff with facial contortion. This starts with contraction of the muscles in face, legs, trunk, etc.
