Measles

Vaccination for measles is available. If in case some infants or toddlers or even grown up individuals are not vaccinated for measles, they may get infected by it. Measles is generally common with kids, but it may also happen to affect the grown ups.

Measles is a viral disease. It causes infection. It occurs generally in spring or the post winter season. Some of the common symptoms of measles are high fever, rashes all over the body, running nose, conjunctivitis, cough, sensitivity of eyes to light etc.

The fever can be as high as 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Two to three days before the emergence of rashes, small red colored, white blue centered spots called the Koplik’s spot may appear inside the mouth. The infection has a life cycle of two weeks. Gradually the rashes and the other symptoms vanish but the cough requires full two weeks to get cured.

Measles weakens the body very much and it takes quite a long time to heal completely. No medicine should be given to the child without consulting the doctor. Many infants are allergic to various drugs; application of those may lead to serious consequences.

Some basic home based therapy should be performed along with providing medicine. The child should be made to drink plenty of water, fruit juice, lemonade, etc. As the eyes become sensitive to light the child should not be allowed to watch the television.

More and more rest is helpful. The German MMR vaccine gives protection to measles. A child is given the first dose at 12- 15 months and the second dose is given at 4-6 years of age.
