Rotovirus

Rotovirus or rotavirus as the name suggests is a virus, which infects the kids with diseases like diarrhea. This is a common disease among the children. Most of the infants in the developing countries die of this disease. There is till date no specific medicine to kill or destroy the virus itself.

As it is a viral infection, antibiotics cannot treat it. The symptoms are diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, low fever, etc. For the various symptoms medicines can be given. The virus attacks the lining of the small intestine. Thus damages the lining. This results to tremendous loss of intestinal fluids and electrolytes. The virus is contagious in nature. It spreads through oral contact of fecal materials.

The treatment to the disease that can be provide at home good amount of rest and feeding the kid with aplenty with electrolytic solutions like ORS, electoral etc, so that dehydration does not occur. Dehydration can pose a real threat. Dehydration is symptom by drying of mouth, less urinal discharge, sunken eyes, lethargy, dry diapers for an hour or so.

If these signs are noticed, the doctor should be immediately consulted and the baby be admitted to the hospital to get it rehydrated, otherwise the child may die. The spread of the disease can be checked by practicing proper cleanliness activities.

The parents should wash their hands properly with soap after diapering the baby. The surfaces used for diapering should also be properly sanitized. If any child attends child care, it should be ensured that proper sanitizing and washing are practiced.
